How to Create a MOSS 2007 VPC Image: The Whole 9 Yards
Now that I've finally completed my series of posts describing how to build a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 Virtual PC image for demos and development work, here is a one-stop-shopping index of all 20 posts:

...and there it is (whew!).

As I stated back when I began this series of posts, this is not intended to be the authoritive source on building a MOSS 2007 VPC image, but it's a process that has worked well for me, and hopefully it will be helpful for others.

I always welcome comments and suggestions, so please drop a line or three and let me know what you think.

Good luck!

Great information!

Tony,

As a former 11-year Microsoft employee and content writer, I've never seen someone put together such a great resource.  It's clearly written & illustrated and I found it VERY useful.

Thanks for your work!

Visual Studio 2005

Hi Tony,

Thank you for compiling this great resource.  I was able to execute all steps, but wanted to install Visual Studio 2005 (Team Suite) in addition.  I have tried countless times to do this, but the install freezes every time.  Have you successfully installed VS or do you know what would cause the install to freeze up?

Thank you,
Terry

Glad you made this.

This past weekend I followed your steps (up to 16), and I've got a working SharePoint 2007 now. Great.
One step that cost me a few hours extra is I made the virtual machine way too small ( 8 GB), and I cannot (yet?) find a way to enlarge a virtual disk.
I greatly appreciate the work you've done to make this manual. Kind regards, Ad Weterings.

Great Stuff

One thought - what about making it into a Domain Controller before the SQL & Sharepoint installs?

That way when you're doing demo's and you're not attached to your corp-net you'll have a positive experience.

Thanks

What about server names for the different virtual machine cloned from one machine?

Tony,

This resource is absolutely brilliant. But, I have a question for you - the post number 21.

We are creating virtual machines for developers to do MOSS development. We create a Virtual Image, and everybody gets a copy.

But, then each developer has to change the computer name in MOSS, SQL Server, and Windows. Would you be kind enough to tell us how to do this, and in what order.

Currently, I have problems with MOSS (after renaming the server using the stsadm tool, an error "unable to resolve all identities" shows up when I click on the operations page.

We followed the following steps: change name in SQL Server (addserver, dropserver) , in MOSS (stsadm tool), and windows computer name change.

Thanks,
Adrigo.

Thanks!

Thank you very much for this list, I used it to quickly set up a MOSS 2007 test environment.  However, I have one problem, anyone off of the server attempting to connect to it can't see the Document Center main page (http://server/Docs).  It shows up with the error message "The Page Cannot be Displayed" from IIS.  Am I missing something with permissions?  Can anyone point me to a resource for how to add general users so that I know I'm doing the right steps?

Disco Virtual?

Muy buen serie de artículos MOSS2007. ¿Una consulta simple, cuál fue el espacio de disco virtual que se usó para esta prueba?

MOSS 2007 Development Virtual Server Set up

Thanks, i have collated this info together with other blog posts to make a complete installation guide for setting up MOSS 2007 development environment. This includes having vs.net installed on the virtual server on its own domain (recommended), as well as detailed guides for installing everything.

awsome information: next steps

hi there
I ma running 32 virtual server running windwos 2003 server, I want ot create a single installation of sharepoint VPS on one server and tryingot deploy the same configuration an all on the other server .
If this is not possible i need to install wss on 32  Virtual server / VM ware.

Do u see think this is feasable?
A simple: configure one VM server and doi u think i can save all the work even installaion in 32 machines  by copying hte oteh files appropriately .
I know this is complex , but am thinking  if we can do . it is great

any way , good job, nice scrreen shots.

Thanks

VHD Size

What is the recommended size for the Virtual Hard Disk?

Thanks for this great guide!

How to Resize vhd's

As someone noted above, it's a common problem to run out of space somewhere along the line in configuring a virtual MOSS environment.

You can resize them with the "VHD Resizer" tool:
http://vmtoolkit.com/files/folders/converters/entry87.aspx

It will take forever as it actually goes through the vhd sector by sector and copies it to a new file.

Also, you will have to do something with the new space that's created.  Someone on the VHD Resizer download site noted:

"The extra space will appear as unformatted raw space. Depending on your drive setup you may be able to resize in in Disk Management, otherwise you need to use something like partition magic to resize your original partition to use the new space"

you should be able to create a new drive and move some files (like a sql log file) to the new partition without any problems.

Tony, I stumbled across this earlier today - having spent the last three weeks doing similar to this. You have done a better job and documented tremendously. FANTASTIC job and thanks for sharing your experience for the betterment of others.

Visual Studio 2005 and Add-Ons

You may want to include instructions on Installing Visual Studio 2005, and when to install it.

You should include VS 2005 Estensions for WSS 3.0 and VS Web Deployment Projects.

You can also improve the IntelliSense in Visual Studio by copying all the XSD files from the WSS Template\XML folder to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Xml\Schema.
