How to Create a Project Server 2007 VPC Image: Part 16

Welcome to part 16 in a series of posts which describe how to create a Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 Virtual PC image for demos and development work. Last time, we looked at how to configure the Project Server OLAP cube building service. This time, we’ll look at how to install and configure Project Professional 2007 inside the virtual machine.

Part 16: Install and Configure Project Professional 2007

Installing Project Professional 2007

Insert the Project Professional 2007 installation media, start the installation, enter the Product Key, then click the Continue button:

Read the license agreement very carefully, select the I accept checkbox, then click the Continue button:

On the Choose the installation you want screen, click the Install Now button:

After the installation has completed successfully, click the Close button:

Configuring Project Professional 2007 to Connect to the Project Server

Select Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Project 2007:

When the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard screen appears, ensure that you are able to access the internet from within your virtual machine, select the I want to activate the software over the Internet option, then click the Next button:

When the software is successfully activated, click the Close button:

In Project Professional, select Tools > Enterprise Options > Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts:

In the Project Server Accounts dialog box, click the Add button:

In the Account Properties dialog box, enter the following information, then click the OK button:

Account Name: Project Server

Project Server URL: http://SERVERNAME/PWA (http://vpc02/PWA, in this case)

When connecting: Use Windows user account

Set as default account: Yes

If the potential security risk alert is displayed, click the Yes button to continue:

In the Project Server accounts dialog box, in the When starting section, select the Manually control connection state option, then click the OK button:

Select File > Exit to close Project Professional:

Select Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Project 2007; select Project Server from the Profile drop-down list, deselect the Enter User Credentials checkbox, and click the OK button:

Project Professional should connect to the Project Server, authenticate successfully, and display a blank project schedule:

You should now have a fully-functional installation of Project Professional 2007, which is capable of connecting successfully to the Project Server.

In Part 17 we’ll look at how to install some of the other Office 2007 applications into our virtual machine.
